A Thunder of Trumpets
- A THUNDER OF TRUMPETS - A computer painting circa 2007. It appears on the dust jacket of the book written by Robert E. Howard, published by Wildside Press in 2010. It is the last book in a 10 volume series that collects all of Howard's "Weird Tales" magazine stories.
A word about Robert E. Howard; I was disturbed when I read his poem, "Abe Lincoln," in which he harshly condemns Lincoln for "butchering" hundreds of thousands of people in the Civil War.
But Lincoln's victory, which kept America as one nation, was important not only to our nation, it was just as important to the rest of the world because only 52 years after the Civil War ended, America was able to assemble a huge military force that helped defeat Germany in WW1. And just 20 years later, the Axis powers; Germany, Japan, and Italy threatened the world. All the nations who were attacked by the axis powers, including England, France and Russia, depended on the "UNITED" States to help supply them with war materials. And with American forces fighting all over the planet the allied forces were able to defeat the axis powers.
All free nations in the world today owe their freedom to America. If Lincoln had allowed our country to be divided, I do not believe that the two smaller nations would have been able to unite, as they did as a single nation, to meet the challenges of the two world wars. If the axis powers had won WW2, the heirs of Hitler, Tojo, and Mussolini would now be ruling the world.
But Mr. Howard could not foresee the future, and I do appreciate his mourning the 600,000 American souls who died in the great American tragedy that was the Civil War. But In the end, Lincoln's victory not only preserved the Union and gave freedom to it's black citizens, it allowed a united America to grow and become the great world power that it is today; the only nation capable of keeping freedom alive on this planet. - That is, it WAS . . . Until now . . .
